Hard to spot at first glance. Brilliant Monarch butterflies cling onto the leaves of eucalyptus trees. I overheard a few experienced onlookers complaining there were far too few butterflies in the Santa Cruz monarch sanctuary this year. As it was my first visit, I was delighted at spying my first small cluster of the distinctively beautiful creatures roosting under a canopy of green. I have been in this area to visit the natural bridges beach at least twice in the past two years, but this time I made sure to dedicate an hour to stroll around it’s park and take photographs. From my time spent here, the underwhelming amount of monarchs brought awareness to the dangers of loosing them to extinction. A visit to this butterfly preserve will rally the importance of balance on our planet to people of all ages.
